En este Marzo, que todo se tiñe de morado, te quiero compartir. Hoy fue la feria académica de mi hija mayor, expuso varios temas y uno de ellos fue este experimento:
Mira mamá, aquí hay dos grupos de plantas, todas tuvieron agua pero las de la izquierda tuvieron sol y las de la derecha no y mira, son diferentes. Antes de eso, escribí lo que pensé que les pasaría, las que tenían sol crecerían y las que no, morirían. No murieron pero tienen más posibilidades de morir que las que crecieron con sol, así que si pasó lo que pensé.
Me siento profundamente conmovida por su entusiasmo, por su emoción con los resultados, por saber que puede hacerlo, porque aplicó el método científico a sus 9 años siendo mujer.
La primera vez que yo me expuse a un pensamiento tan ordenado habrá sido en el último año de prepa o al inicio de la carrera de medicina, recuerdo que se sentía difícil; aunado a que parecía haber una “regla” implícita y tácita de que la ciencia es para hombres y además no para todos; si eres mujer, haces ciencia y me estás leyendo, tal vez estés de acuerdo conmigo o lo habrás sentido, más de una vez.
Años después entré a la maestría en ciencias, donde la mayoría de mis compañeros y maestros, fueron hombres. Recuerdo ese doble discurso, por un lado la necesidad de que en México haya más científicos más investigadores, la tristeza de que pocos se interesen y se esfuercen en serlo, y por otro escuchar lo difícil que es terminar la maestría y graduarse; ser investigador no es para todos los que quieran, sino para un grupo selecto (que todas mis palabras tengan género en este párrafo, no es al azar). Tuve algunas compañeras, recuerdo a la mejor de la clase, genetista con una bebé, inteligente, dedicada, comprometida, algunas veces salía unos minutos antes de una de las clases para llegar por su bebé, y recuerdo el comentario de algún profesor -ya que ella había salido, claro- alguien avísele a la doctora, que no puede ser las dos cosas, tiene que elegir, ser mamá o ser maestra en ciencias… me pregunto si los hombres de ahí, también habían ya elegido.
Hace poco fui al congreso de ACCLAM, tomé el taller precongreso “Cómo analizar la evidencia científica para tomar decisiones clínicas en lactancia”, todas mis compañeras y maestras, fueron mujeres, varias con hijos; que importante es vernos representadas, ver que se puede hacer y se puede hacer bien.
Que orgullo ver hoy a mi hija a sus 9 años haciendo una hipótesis, diseñar un estudio experimental, discutir sus resultados y concluirlos, que orgullo verla haciendo ciencia, siendo mujer, sabiendo que puede y que la ciencia también es para ella!
